Ngeno wins the men’s race, Chepkwony triumphs again in the women’s race
#runforwater, the hashtag of the event dedicated to protecting water resources
The Acea Run Rome the Marathon took place today. The water marathon celebrates the connection between sport and water resources. The thirtieth edition of the event was a triumph for Kenya, with two winners and three additional Kenyan athletes securing podium finishes in both the men’s and women’s races. Ngeno claimed victory in the men’s race, while two of his compatriots, Kipsang and Kogo, finished second and third. Kenyan athlete Chepkwony won in the women’s race (following her 2024 success), while Ethiopian athlete Gebre and Kenyan Kangogo placed second and third, respectively. Barbara Marinali, President of Acea, participated in the award ceremony, presenting the trophy to Kipsang, the men’s runner-up.
Along the 42-kilometre course, the Acea Group set up twenty refreshment points, where, between today and yesterday, during the non-competitive stracittadina race, 330 thousand cartons of water were distributed to approximately 50 thousand athletes from 120 nations. Acea, Italy’s leading company in the water sector, has also developed the Acquea App, designed for athletes, citizens, and tourists. The app allows users to locate the nearest fountain, nasone, or Acea water house among Rome’s 3,500 geolocated water points, enabling them to drink and monitor their hydration levels.
With its hashtag #runforwater, the race served as an opportunity to highlight the importance of water and promote a culture of resource protection, reuse, and recycling, elements that are increasingly fundamental given the challenges of water service management: climate changes and the ecological transition.
The water marathon’s route winds through the queen city of water, where hydraulic science was born, and the first aqueducts in history were built. It is the ideal place to establish water as the defining theme of one of the most important running events at both the national and international levels.
