Acea for World Energy Saving Day
In Rome’s Tor di Valle district, between the river Tiber and Via Ostiense, there is a thermoelectric power plant that generates electric power and supplies thermal energy to the areas of Mostacciano, Torrino Sud and Mezzocamino.
The Tor di Valle power plant has recently completed a full renovation and upgrading process: today it is equipped with a modern, high-yield cogeneration system fuelled by natural gas. Cogeneration has always been the pride of this plant: the thermal energy produced does not disperse in the atmosphere, but is used to heat private houses through heat networks.
Upgrading of the power plant was accompanied by another major innovation: the introduction of a single software platform managing all power generation plants remotely.
We can now monitor and operate the whole infrastructure remotely using one system, ensuring citizens uninterrupted service, quality and efficiency, explains Roberto De Romanis, Head of Tor di Valle and Montemartini Plants and Director of the Energy Services Unit. This system, which will gradually be extended to all hydroelectric plants and to photovoltaic plants going forward, is called Wonderware and provides other advantages, such as automation and record-keeping. Based on a steady dialogue between the network and the plant, power generation becomes self-regulating, either increasing or decreasing production according to demand. Moreover, the creation of a database containing historical data on plant performance will simplify the evaluation and planning of maintenance operations.

What makes the Tor di Valle innovation model unique is, among other things, its concern for the environment. Together with traffic, home heating is the main cause for pollution in large cities. Heat networks save tons of fuel, as they are fuelled by a power plant generating both electricity and heat. Moreover, as the power plant is fuelled by natural gas, this significantly reduces CO₂ emissions.
