Since June 2025, Mauro Alfonso has served as Chief Executive Officer of a.Gas S.p.A., a company within the Acea Group operating in the natural gas distribution sector.
He joined Acea S.p.A. in 2023 as Head of Mergers & Acquisitions in the Environment division and, since November 2024, has also been Chief Executive Officer of Umbria Distribuzione Gas and Chairman of the Board of AdistribuzioneGas, both Group companies operating in natural gas distribution, with a strong focus on innovation, safety and sustainability.
From 2019 to 2022 he was Chief Executive Officer of Simest S.p.A. (part of the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti Group), where he steered the institution through the critical pandemic years. Under his leadership, the company managed more than 22,000 financing applications in support of over 20,000 Italian businesses, for a total value of around €14 billion, contributing to the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and achieving in just two and a half years volumes exceeding those delivered in the previous three decades.
In 2014 he embarked on a five-year journey with Cerved Rating Agency, created through a spin-off from the Cerved Group. Joining as Head of Rating Activities, he oversaw its development and later became Chief Executive Officer and General Manager. In this capacity, he transformed the agency into a market leader in Italy and a key player at European level.
Between 2012 and 2014 he founded and led Dagong Europe Credit Rating Agency, the first Asian rating agency authorised by ESMA to operate in the European market. From 2003 to 2012 he worked at Fitch Ratings as Senior Director, with responsibility for the Italian market and a contribution to strategic development at the European level.
In previous years, he gained solid experience in asset management, holding senior positions at Société Générale Asset Management and Paribas Asset Management, where he managed product distribution to institutional investors and major clients. His career began at Caboto Holding Sim (now Banca IMI – Intesa Sanpaolo), where he was Senior Banker in charge of financial institution coverage and Marketing Director of the London office.
Alongside his managerial activity, he is also engaged in academia and publishing. Author of essays and publications on finance, governance and internationalisation, he has held a professorship in Corporate Communication at CIELS Padua, been a member of the FINTEMA committee at Bocconi University, and lectured in courses and seminars at other leading universities.
He holds a degree in Business Administration with a specialisation in Finance from Bocconi University in Milan.
